Mykonos is an island, part of the Cyclades group in Greece. It lies between Paros, Syros, Tinos and Naxos. Mykonos has an area approximately 85.5 square kilometers and rises to an elevation about 341 meters at its highest peak. In the island live 9,320 inhabitants. Most of them live in the major town Mykonos. The town lies on the west coast of the island. Composition of the island is primarily of granite.
The island is an independent peripheral unit of the South Aegean Periphery. It is only community of the peripheral unit. The peripheral unit Mykonos was build out of the former Cyclades Prefecture. The community also includes the islands Rineia, Delos and several uninhabited islands. The municipality includes total area of 105.2 square kilometers.
Mykonos has relies on the desalination of sea water and natural fresh water in order to meet the needs of its inhabitants. In the island live 9,320 inhabitants. Most of them are living in the major town Mykonos. The beaches of the island are preference for many tourists.
